Distinguished guests

Ladies and Gentlemen

I feel proud and greatly honoured to join Ambassador Wang Weiguo, his staff, the Chinese Community in Seychelles, on this auspicious event of the 60th National Day Celebrations of the People's Republic of China.

At the outset, I wish to convey a message of congratulation from President James Michel, the Government and People of Seychelles, to President Hu Jintao, the Government and People of China on this special day.

Excellency,

After more than 3 decades of exceptionally good relations based on well understood bilateral interests, as well as a similar vision of China - Africa Cooperation and co-development, our two Governments have spared no efforts in further consolidating our existing ties of friendship and cooperation.

The meetings between President James Michel and President Hu Jintao in 2006 and 2007 in Beijing and Victoria respectively opened a new chapter in our bilateral relations.

Numerous activities have been and are taking place in China and in Seychelles aiming at elevating our relations to higher levels.  The forthcoming tourism fair to be held next month in Beijing is another occasion to display Seychelles to Chinese people, and further the links between the two peoples.

Excellency,

We place on record our appreciation to the Chinese Government for all forms of assistance provided to Seychelles over the years.  Seychelles has greatly benefitted from China.

The presence of 56 young Seychellois nationals in Chinese Universities, the construction of several projects such as the Baie Lazare school- which is to be officially opened in only a few days-, the advanced work in progress on the Au Cap School and the new National Assembly building add to the long list.

Other projects in the field of electricity, water, transportation and other infrastructure also important and vital for the sustainable development of our country are currently in the in the making and under consideration. We remain confident that these would be coming to fruition shortly.

The significant contribution of China in our efforts to implement the economic reform programme as well as in the fight against piracy are also significant and worth noting.

This demonstrates how China is as an important and privileged partner of Seychelles.

I wish to reiterate our interest to further pursue and strengthen our political friendship with China and at the same time develop our partnership by encouraging further investments in different fields.

Excellency,

It is a widely shared view that promotion of peace, security and stability is a prerequisite for development and prosperity.

We all know the challenges the world is now confronting.  Among others, the economic issues, the energy crisis and climate change have become serious threats to the stability and the development of the whole world and require a true multilateral approach and co-operation between all countries.

It is our mission to remain to be ever prepared for the challenges and opportunities brought about by the globalization processes, which necessitate the adoption of dynamic foreign policies, in order to build strong partnerships and true solidarity to overcome the problems.
China Africa Cooperation is a testimony of the commitment of the Chinese Government to continue contributing towards the socio economic development of Africa which is becoming a rising power and is consolidating its place in the World.

In the period ahead and in a very near future, Africa’s destiny is bound to change.

The valuable contribution of China in this process is indeed remarkable and well appreciated.

Excellency,

May I reiterate Seychelles full support to the One - China - Two Systems policy and for the peaceful reunification of Taiwan with the mainland.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I now have the pleasure to invite you to join me in a toast to the good health and prosperity of His Excellency, President Hu Jintao and to the everlasting friendship and partnership between Seychelles and China.

I thank you.
