First Visioning Exercise kicks off tomorrow

Thursday 28th September 2017, VICTORIA, SEYCHELLES:

The first sectorial sessions for the Visioning exercise for the development of Vision 2030 and the eventual National Development Strategy 2018-2022 will start next week on the 4th and the 5th of October 2017, from 9.00a.m to 4.00 p.m, at the International Conference Centre.

The sessions will start with the Energy, Education, Private, Financial and Social Sectors.

The Government of Seychelles has embarked on an initiative to establish the Vision 2032 and the National Development Strategy 2018-2022; a framework for Sustainable National Development, (NDS). The Department of Economic Planning in the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Economic Planning has been given the responsibility and mandate to coordinate the process of the Visioning Exercise for Vision 2032, inclusive of a stakeholders’ analysis, mapping of sustainable development processes and strategies in Seychelles.

And this week, a second meeting with facilitators of the visioning exercise took place at the Ministry’s Conference Room. The objective was to prepare and discuss the main introductory presentation to be delivered to the stakeholders at the opening plenary session.

A meeting which was chaired by the Minister for Finance, Trade and Economic Planning, Dr. Peter Larose. Also in attendance was the Principal Secretary for Economic Planning, Mrs. Elizabeth Agathine, Mr. Roland Alcindor, and the UNDP Project Manager amongst others.

Mrs. Jeniffer Jasmin, the Director General for Economic Planning, delivered a presentation on the visioning exercise by guiding facilitators and rapporteurs on information that will be required from them to successfully produce the National Development Strategy for 2018 to 2022.

It was also an opportunity for facilitators to provide comments, feedback and or suggestions on the process to be followed, and some of the points raised were; availability of audit findings for the sectors and length of the visioning exercise to name but a few. P.S Agathine also remarked that the idea is to get the people to say what they would wish, want and dream, for the future.

The second exercise which will take place from the 9th to the 10th of the same month will comprised of Housing and Infrastructure, Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries, Transport, Environment and Governance Sectors.

It is intended that the NDS will become an effective and enduring mechanism for guiding and coordinating national efforts and initiatives for sustainable development in Seychelles, through ‘multiple, diverse and as large a stakeholder participation as possible’.

 

The NDS will lay the foundation and pathway for attaining developed country status by the year 2030, providing for an orderly long-term development process, inclusive of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the NDS 2018-2022 will be the first national instrument that will priorities and articulate a 5-year development programme in greater details.

The Economic Department is calling on members of the public, partners and stakeholders to participate in the exercises and contribute as much as possible in the drafting and implementation of the Vision 2032.
