Government announces new temporary measures to support lower income earners

July 05, 2022

The Government has announced new temporary measures to support lower income earners.

The new measures were announced in the National Assembly, this afternoon by Ministers, Mr. Naadir Hassan (Finance, National Planning and Trade), Dr. Justin Valentin (Education) and Mrs. Marie-Celine Zialor (Youth, Sports and Family).

The financial temporary support, will help to ease the pressure on families, because of the high cost of commodities and fuel.

The measures are targeting employees in the public and private sector earning less than R8,500 and those in the bracket R8,501 to R9,000 will receive a scale amount. Assistance will also be available for those in this group, whose electricity meters are registered on their names. School children in state schools all also be assisted, through free breakfast and lunch. There will be also a Maximum Retail Price mechanism on all goods imported and sold by STC.

In his statement, Minister Hassan explained that the government has been evaluation the situation, since the crisis between Ukraine and Russia erupted in February, considering both countries are major producers of agricultural products, and the impact it will have on world prices and availability.

Since the conflict, the price of commodities, especially food and fuel worldwide has increased significantly, impacting negatively on the world and that of Seychelles economic recovery from the COVID 19 pandemic.

Further details on the registration process will be announced soon.
