WTO conducts first review of Seychelles trade policy

April 04, 2022

A delegation from the World Trade Organisation is in the country to conduct a review of Seychelles Trade policy.

The review is the first being conducted since Seychelles accession to the WTO in 2015, effectively becoming the 161st-member state of the organization.

During the review, the team will meet with the relevant stakeholders, thus producing a report, which will be further discussed, by Seychelles and eventually other member states of WTO.

The report is broken down into four sections:

  • Economic environment
  • Trade and Investment Regime
  • Trade Policies and Practices by members
  • Trade Policies by Sectors

The review and the production of the report, will be beneficial to Seychelles as it will assist in developing domestic policy, enable inter-agency cooperation, produce coherent policies and identify areas where Seychelles may need technical assistance.

All members of WTO have their trade policy reviewed by the organization, the frequency of which, varies, depending on a country’s share of world trade. The frequency of the review process is 3, 5 and 7 years. For Seychelles the review is every 7 years.

The trade policy review reports (government and WTO Secretariat) are circulated to all member states of WTO, in an effort to improve transparency in trade and investment regime.

The WTO mission in Seychelles is from 04th to 06th April.
