Towards a More Sustainable and Inclusive Future- Vision 2033 and national Development Strategy launched

August 05, 2019

Vision 2033 and the National Development Strategy, NDS, were launched in a ceremony at the International Conference Centre, presided by President Danny Faure and other senior officials of the government, local dignitaries amongst others.

In his address President Danny Faure stated that the vision will take Seychelles into the future and that it will guide us to fulfil our ambition to improve the quality of life of our people.

"As we develop, Government becomes a facilitator rather than a participant. Through the principles of Transparency, Accountability and Good Governance, this is possible whilst staying on an upward, positive path. This National Development Strategy document outlines the path, or our roadmap, towards a resilient, principled and prosperous Seychelles", President Faure noted.

Minister Maurice Loustau Lalanne noted in his opening address the importance of working together for the successful implemantation of the NDS to ensure the achievement of the country's development aspirations. "Since they have been accordingly aligned, successful implementation will also contribute towards the realisationof our global and regional commitments as enshrined in the Uniteds' Agenda 2030, the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the SIDS' Samoa pathway".

The visioning exercise took over two years exercise, giving ourselves the space and time to reflect on and imagine the kind of Seychelles we want for ourselves, for our children, and our country in 2033. We held numerous consultations with a diverse cross-section of society. We met with students, the private sector, civil society, retired citizens, and civil servants. We met with residents of Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue.

It all culminated in these two documents: Seychelles’ Vision 2033 and its accompanying National Development Strategy, which together present a clear view of where we are, where we want to go, and over what time frame. It is a vision that will take Seychelles into the future and that will guide us to fulfil our ambition to improve the quality of life of our people.

The Principal Secretary for Economic Planning, Elizabeth Agathine, for her part, spoke about the way forward; "going forward now we have to ensure that the country's budget is aligned with the plans, that they are monitored and evaluated so that it can bbe implemented. But she noted that the human resouces still remains a challenge for the country, especially one as small as Seychelles, but she says that this should not stop us from moving forward.

Minister Lalanne presented President Faure with a copy of the documents during the ceremony.

The next step in the implementation of Vision 2033 and NDS 2019-2023 is to conduct regional presentations with different groups of people on what they plans are about. The documents are accessible on the Ministry's website and facebook page, and they will also be distributed in all agencies, ministries, schools etc.
