The World Intellectual Property Day 2019

April 23, 2019

Seychelles, will be celebrating the 2019 World Intellectual Property Day on the 26th of April, through various activities organised by key stakeholders in the field. The activities are aimed at promoting Seychelles’ culture, local entrepreneurs and enhancing policy makers’ knowledge on specific aspects on intellectual property.

The activities will kick off with a national workshop on Copyright Treaties being organised by the Trade Division of the Ministry of Finance, Trade, Investment and Economic Planning in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The workshop will take place at the Care House in Victoria over two days, from 25th to 26th April 2019, from 9am to 4pm. Participation to the workshop is upon invitation only.

The aim workshop is to provide relevant stakeholders with the knowledge and general understanding on relevant Copyright treaties administered by the WIPO, which would guide stakeholders on accession to these treaties.

Given that the theme of the World IP day is “Reach for Gold: IP and Sports”, the workshop will also include a component on the link between sports and intellectual property, whereby the National Sports Council (NSC) will be sensitising stakeholders on the importance of IP in the Sports sector.

On the 26th of April itself, the Enterprise Seychelles Agency (ESA) will be organising an informative fair at the Camion Hall aimed at promoting its services and to showcase the products and services of some micro, small and medium enterprises.. Other relevant stakeholders, such as the National Institute for Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI) and the Department of Environment will also be showcasing at the fair.

Additionally, the World Intellectual Property Day will also be used as an opportunity to demonstrate the Seychelles culture and tradition perpetuated through years of creation and innovation by artists and performers. This will be showcased at the National Museum in Victoria with musical performances by the Sokwe and Benn Etoile groups. The usual services of the museum itself will be available to the public including the book shop, which will be equipped with the numerous books written by Seychellois authors over the years.
