ESAAMLG completes Mauritius' Mutual Evaluation

September 24, 2018

The Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group, ESAAMLG has completed the assessment of Mauritius’ Anti-Money laundering and Counter-Terrorist and Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT) system. The Council of Ministers of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG), at its meeting held in Seychelles on 7th September 2018, approved the publication of the Mutual Evaluation Report (MER) of Mauritius. Following the approval, the Report has been published on the ESAAMLG website. I would therefore like to congratulate the Government of Mauritius for the successful completion of its Mutual Evaluation exercise.

The Mutual Evaluation is a comprehensive review of the legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks in place in the jurisdiction for combatting money laundering and terrorist and proliferation financing and the effectiveness of the measures. The Report presents key findings and recommendations necessary for Mauritius to continue strengthening its AML/CFT regime and improve its compliance with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Standards. The Council was therefore pleased to learn that Mauritius had already started addressing some of the deficiencies identified in the MER. On behalf of the Council, I would like to encourage Mauritius to continue with the positive work it has started.

In accordance with the ESAAMLG Second Round of Mutual Evaluation Procedures and Follow-Up Process, Mauritius is required to submit a Follow-Up Report on the progress it is making for discussion by the Task Force of Senior Officials in April 2019. This will give the Task Force an opportunity to determine the level of the progress made, further advise the authorities and make necessary recommendations for consideration by the Council of Ministers at its next meeting in September, 2019. As a Council, we are confident that Mauritius will have made the desired progress to enable it to comply with the FATF Standards in the shortest time possible
