First ever World Intellectual Property Day Fair opens tomorrow

Wednesday 25th April 2018, VICTORIA, SEYCHELLES Relevant national stakeholders will be taking part in the first World Intellectual Property Day Fair tomorrow at the ICCS Car park from 11.00 a.m. to 6.00p.m. The one-day fair will see the participation of women entrepreneurs showcasing their different locally made products such as glass art, souvenirs and traditional dresses, fresh fruit juice to name but a few.

It is the Vice-President, Vincent Meriton who will officially open the World Intellectual Property Day Fair tomorrow

The aim of the fair is to sensitise the public and private sector on Intellectual Property, and where local entrepreneurs will showcase their creative and innovative works. In this sense, much emphasis is being put on the different rights pertaining to IP; where the general public as well as entrepreneurs will be more aware of the various rights and risks associated with infringing these rights and/or not protecting their intellectual property.

The fair also aims to develop an appreciation for the realm of IP and the ingenuity and immense hard work it takes to acquire such rights.

World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on the 26th April every year and this year it is being commemorated under the theme ‘Powering Change: Women in Innovationand Creativity’. It speaks about increasing awareness on the role that intellectual property rights (including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright, geographical indication) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.

World IP Day offers a unique opportunity to join with others around the globe to consider how intellectual property helps the global arts scene to flourish and how it enables the technological innovation that drives human progress.

The is a joint initiative of the Trade Division of the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Economic Planning, and CINEA in collaboration with other local partners, namely, the Office of the Registrar General, National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation, Department of Culture, Small Enterprise Promotion Agency, Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Seychelles Bureau of Standards, and the Seychelles Author and Composer Society.

The Principal Secretary for Trade, Ms. Cilia Mangroos, is the Chairperson of the National IP Committee, and the Secretariat of the Committee falls under the purview of the Trade Division.

The fair also aims to develop an appreciation for the realm of IP and the ingenuity and immense hard work it takes to acquire such rights.
