Department of Industries

The Department of Industries which was previously under the portfolio responsibility of the Ministry of National Development was transferred to the Ministry of Finance in September 2009.

The Mission

The mission of the Department of Industries is to encourage economic development and the improvement of the quality of life of the people of Seychelles through the facilitation of commerce, entrepreneurship and compliment other institutions efforts in the protection of consumers.

The objectives

Implement Government’s policy to create an enabling environment for private sector entrepreneurship and ensuring that local industries become competitive. To pay special attention to emerging (infant) industries to assist them withstand the pressures of a liberalized trading environment. To accomplish the above objectives the Government has created the Department of Industries which is responsible for ensuring that policies relating to Industrial Development, the Craft Sector, Micro Enterprise and National Science Technology & Innovation are implemented. The department also focuses on developments in those sectors and ensures that such policies are updated regularly in line with the new developments in those areas. It takes into consideration:

  • the challenges of the new liberalized business environment in Seychelles
  • the new fiscal (tax) framework

The Seychelles Bureau of Standards as the regulating body for standards also falls under the responsibility of the Department of Industries as well as the Small Enterprise Promotion Agency (SEnPA). The Department needs to ensure the strengthening of the role of these two institutions.

The management and development of the Providence Industrial Estate, which remains the primary location for industrial development also falls under the portfolio responsibility of the Departemnt of Industries. With the development of new estates in the near future on Eve Island and Ile Perseverance, a new authority to manage the industrial estates and other industrial properties and micro-enterprise projects will be set up soon to ensure the proper management and development of these estates.
